CENTENNIAL CUP

Night Pilot Wins at New Plymouth

SIR CRUSOE SECOND Dominion Special Service. NEW PLYMOUTH, March 6. The Taranaki Jockey Clubs Centennial Cup meeting opened in overcast weather, and half-way through the programme heavy rain set in, making conditions very unpleasant.

The cup, which was run in misty rain, was won by the Aucklander, Night Pilot, who is in the same stable as Kindergarten. His owner, Mrs. W. 1). Graham, formerly lived in New Plymouth, and won the cup in 1935 with Ferscn. The sprint event tvent to Gold Dale. There was a good attendance, and the totalizator handled £18,508/10/-, compared with £15,566 last year, an increase of £2942/10/-, which was a good result considering the unfavourable weather, which restricted betting. Comfortable Win.

'The Waitara Hurdle Race was won comfortably by the favourite, Foxiana. Rpllicker, chancing his fences, opened up a big break on the field in the first halfmile, but Foxiana went up to him five furlongs from home, worried him for the next two furlongs, and then had the race won at the last fence. Rollicker spoilt his chance by hitting two fences very hard, but battled on for second, with General Riske a neck back third, and Resingold fourth. Improved Colt.

A smart beginning from No. 2 assisted Ring Chief to win the Juvenile Handicap, but he looked and raced like an improved colt since lie was last seen in public. He ran in the lead with Miss Phaleron throughout, and held her comfortably at bay to win by a short length. Kaimanawa was unlucky to draw 13, and had to do it wide out for half the journey. He was fifth at the home turn, giving the leaders several lengths’ start, and finished well to miss second money by a head only. Opuatia, who trailed the leaders to the turn, was fourth, Good Finishing Run.

Losing: a couple of lengths at the barrier, Gold Dale was last early in the Flying Handicap, but ran up on the outside of the leaders turning into the straight and, with a good finishing effort, wore down Kentucky to win by a long head. Zest, Dinky Di and Trig Station were the leaders into the straight, but they all weakened, giving way first to Kentucky and Screen Star, and. then, in turn, these two were beaten by Gold Dale. His slow beginning and the, e/tra ground he covered made Gold Dale's performance attractive. Surprise in Maiden. Backers encountered a reverse in the maiden event, which was won by Valtour at win odds of double figures. Salvation quickly got to the front and drew away clear of the field, but she was hanging badly and, approaching the home turn, she ran completely off the course and lost all chance. Miss Hallomet and Valtour, who followed Salvation, were left in front, and they fought it out, Valtour winning handily. Sunfire, at place odds of more than a score, finished over the others for third, and Malo, who got away slowly, was fourth, followed by Royal Talkie, Gainly and Salvation. Cup to Favourite. The win favourite, Night Pilot, scored a comfortable win in the Taranaki Cup He was kept in a handy position throughout, while Olympus and Cheval de Volee took turns in the lead and, nearing, the home turn, he moved up to a position from where he could assume command as soon as the field entered the straight. He got to the front in a few strides and over the last furlong the issue was never in doubt, Night Pilot winning by two lengths from Sir Crusoe, who trailed the leaders for a mile but then lost his position. He came on again in the straight and comfortably beat, the others, without looking likely to overhaul the winner. Piastre, who was last till the three, furlongs mark, finished with his usual solid run from the back, just beating Friesland, who was also doing his best work at the close. Cheval de Volee was fifth, Gay Fox sixth, and Dark Eagle seventh. Long Lead Lost. Sanction tried to win the Okato Handicap all the way, and at one stage was eight lengths out from Vai Pere, with the others strung out. but Hunting Bee moved up round the turn and ran Sanetibn down to win by half a length, while Filbert,' last at the half-mile, finished strongly 7 to run Sanction to a dead-heat for second money. Vai Pere, who closed on Sanction nearing the home turn, tired into fourth place, and the other two runners were well beaten. Narrow Victory. Miss Clipper scored a narrow victory over Martene in the County Handicap, for which she was fourth favourite. Martene had charge at the home turn from Miss Clipper and Gitana Lass, and. Miss Clipper wore Martene down to win by half a neck, with Gitana Lass a close third. Mansura was fourth. Comfortable Win. Circular Note won the Timaru Handicap comfortably from Surveyor-Geheral, who made all the pace, but could not hold off Circular Note’s run in the straight, the Trentham candidate winning by threequarters of a length. These two had the finish to themselves over the last furlong. Mountain Fox did best of the others, taking third money ahead of Tavoy, who finished on well from behind.
