TARANAKI CUP

Opening Of Autumn Meeting FORM AND PROSPECTS Several Visitors Engaged (By The Watcher.) The Taranaki 'Centennial Cup, the feature event today at New Plymouth, on the opening day of the Taranaki Jockey -Club’s autumn meeting, has drawn, a field of 15. Stables from many districts are represented, including one from Trentham, and a contingent from Auckland. The success of the fixture would seem assured. Recent form at this end of the island would suggest that the topweight, Sir Crusoe, has excellent prospects, but there is a strong Auckland following for. the three-year-old Night Pilot. Night Pilot, since returning from Australia, has come to very good form, and though it will be his first start in open company, he is expected to give a good account of himself. His last win was secured on Saturday at Pukekohe, and he has left the impression among good judges that he will stay well. This is not surprising in view of -his pedigree. He is a good-looking colt by Night Raid from Lytup by Clarenceux from Plame, by Phaeton from Catherine Wheel, by Maxin. He is thus related to Phar Lap, who was by Night Raid from Entreaty, by Winkle from Prayer Wheel, by Pilgrim’s Progress from Catherine Wheel.

Others with prospects include Friesland, Cheval de Voice, who galloped well last Saturday morning, Gay Fox, Piastre. Cheval de Voice won the race two years ago under 9.0, and T. George, the trainer of Piastre, trained last year’s winner, Trench Law. Incidentally Night Pilot is owned by Mrs. W. I). Graham, a former resident of New Plymouth, who_won the Taranaki Cup' with Fersen in 193 a. Clinch is regarded as a doubtful starter. Royal Star 11, thq topweight in the Flying Handicap,. has had a long spell from racing, and he will probably be a bit new yet. Favouritism may go to Zest, who has fine early speed, a big advantage at New Plymouth, and who won so well at Hawera. The same stable, however, has another smart galloper in Trig Station in the field, and his chances cannot be dismissed. Dinky Di has lately raced well in the Auckland district and Kentucky, on last Saturday’s effort at Bulls, should have good prospects. The district horse, Gold Dale, will also command- a large following. The track will be in good order and fast. Betting will be win and place. Minvaal has been suffering from a stone bruise and is an unlikely starter today. Riding engagements include: —W. J. Broughton, Ring Chief, Surveyor-Gener-al, Martene and Vai Pere; W. M Thomson, Filbert. Gitana Lass and Windsor Glow: C. Cole, Southern Blood, Royal Star 11, and Teasof: G. Sexton, One Whetu; TV. Grindlay, Resingold; J. Williamson, Barry Boy and High Tone; H. P.
