LONDON, March 2
Formations of Italian planes today rained bombs for half an hour on rescue workers and salvageworkers m the area at Larissa, Greece,, that was stricken by the earthquake on Friday.
Immediate British aid was rendered to the Greek authorities after the earthquake. Detachments .of the Royal Air Force in the area at once sent first-aid squadrons, which assisted in removing the injured from the damaged buildings and gave medical aid. Casualties were rushed to hospital on a British transport. Yesterday a formation of British bombers loaded medical supplies and transported a contingent of the R.A.M.C. to Larissa to render first-aid assistance. Other aircraft stood by in case of need.
The *lamage to R.A.F. personnel and property was slight. One aircraftman was injured. Many persons had remarkable escapes when the walls of buildings collapsed. One party was dug from beneath an enormous pile of debris. As soon as the roll had been called and all accounted for, squads were ’organized and rushed into "the town, where, alongside Greek soldiers and civilians, they worked throughout the whole of Friday night and yesterday. [lt was reported from Athens that 19,000 of Larissa’s population of 24,000 were rendered homeless.]
