VISIT TO WEST COAST

Mr. Armstrong To Inspect Public Works

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

WESTPORT, March 3.

Accompanied by the new Public Works Department engineer-in-chief, Mr. W. L. Newnham, the Minister of Public Works, Mr. Armstrong, arrived a’ Westport this evening. At a civic dinner Mr. Armstrong said that because of labour and material shortages it was necessary for only essential public works to continue. His reason for visiting Buller was to ascertain the most urgent public works. The Government was doing the best possible with the labour and material available. The Government was also building as many houses as huinanly possible and would build more but for two things—shortage of labour and material, not shortage of money. Mr. Armstrong concluded with a tribute to Mr. Semple, who, he said, spent money freely but wisely. Very few men in New Zealand had the same driving force as Mr. Semple, and therefore it was a hard job for him to'follow in Mr. Semple’s footsteps.

Mr. Armstrong will visit Stockton and Karamea and see the WestportPakihi drainage work tomorrow. He will leave for Greymouth on Wednesday.
