MANY STARVING
Dodecanese Islanders’ Plight
MORALE VERY LOW
(By Telegraph. —Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received February 23, 7 p.m.) ATHENS, February 22.
The radio stated that 33 refugees from the Dodecanese Islands arrived in Turkey. They said the inhabitants of the Dodecanese Islands were dying in such numbers from starvation that Italians had forbidden the ringing of church bells in an attempt to keep up morale. The authorities were denying the islanders meat, sugar and coffee, and were allowing them only seven ounces of lamp oil a month, for which reason most houses were in darkness after sunset. Women and children were dying daily from exhaustion. The soldiers’ morale was very low. Only officers were given meat.
