36,000 Head Yarded At Feilding Ewe Fair VALUES MUCH BETTER THAN EXPECTED No Fancy Prices Realized Dominion Special Service. FEILDING, February 21. With an entry of 36,000 head, the Feilding ewe fair today opened the first of the current season's large sales of sheep. The penning included a larger proportion of two-tooth ewes than usual, and for the most part they were of good to medium quality and yarded in favourable condition. In view of the peculiar conditions affecting the meat market speculation about values had been general before the sale, and later it was generally agreed that prices were far better than had been expected. Bidding was strong without being keen, and practically everything was sold under the hammer. In past years fancy prices had been paid for specially-selected lines of two-tooths, but a fairly common want of confidence in the future market held operators back from spectacular limits. The top price of 4S/- for a line of twotooths yarded by the J. D. Hocking Estate, Kiwitea, was a splendid eale ami topped the market Ewes from this property have secured pride of place on many previous cceafions, up to 05/- being real, ized by Hocking ewes in the past. The next best price for two-tooths was -11/-, these being ’ anted bv J. E. Corpe, Feild. ing. Other good lines ot two-tooths ranged from 35/- to 37/6. and the average for all classes was about 3'2/-. Fur four-tooths up to 30/0 was paid, and sixtootl:S mail' to Ct/ii. The sale for adult sleep was also better than expected. 1.-st four-year ewes making 20/1 to 27/3. and seeonc grade from 23/1) to 25/6. Association’s annual ram fair, and auctioneers commented favourably on the buoyant tone of tlie selling, which was maintained right to tin 1 end of tlie sale.
