INDUSTRY AND FARMING

Appeals on the'ground of public interest were heard by the Wellington Armed Forces Appeal Board yesterday, the employers being appellants in most cases, 'file board comprised Mr. Stilwell, S.-M.. chairman. Mr. I’. Coyle and Mr. A. I‘arlane, with Mr. C. O. Bell, Crown irjpresenlative, and Mr. D. Roundhill, secretary. A number of cases concerned farm hands. Appeals dealt with were: — Boring Industries Ltd., in respect of Archibald Cecil Burns, furnace hand, engaged in smelting waste for re-use. hardship also being cited. The appeal wa.s dismissed, Burns not. to be called up for a year. New Zealand Slippers, Ltd., for Oscar Aussie George Isberg, shoe designer, stated to be the only pattern cutter available, the firm’s patterns having been destroyed by fire. A sine die adjournment was granted. Edward Joseph Bonnell, trainee carpenter (hardship also cited) and his employer, J. AA’. Knight, co-appealed. Bonnell wanted time to complete his apprenticeship, which was to expire in July. His appeal was dismissed, appellant not to be called up before July 31. Kenneth Stenton Taylor, medical herbalist and dietitian, sought a threemouths postponement to enable his sister to take over his business. The appeal was dismissed, appellant not to be called up for three months. Frank Whiteman, farmer, for his sou, Oymand Leo 'Whiteman, citing also hardship. A sine die adjournment was granted. Bristol-Myers Co. Propty., Ltd., for Ernest Raymond Hill, factory foreman, hardship also being advanced. Hill was stated to lie in sole charge of the firm’s manufacturing processes. The appeal was dismissed, Hill not to be called up for a year. Dominion Dyers, Lid., for Erie Thompson, dyer, hardship also being cited. A sine die adjournment was granted. Frank (.’root, belting manufacturer, had his appeal dismissed, appellant not to be called up for three months.

Lincoln Thomas Davies, machinist, citing also hardship, stated, “If the decision of the board goes against me I do not intend to leave my home for the present as my wife is in delicate health and under medical care.” The appeal was dismissed. Mrs. I. Woodward, Petone, appealed on the ground of hardship only in respect of her only unmarried son, Harold Theodore Woodward, milk roundsman, on whom she said she was dependent, her husband being in hospital. The appeal was dismissed, Woodward not to be called up for three months. Charles Henry Williams, farmer, Kaitokc, who also cited hardship, appealed for his son, Martin Juffs Williams, and an adjournment sine die was granted. John Theodore Killick, citing also hardship, stated he was the only butcher in the Paraparaumu district. His appeal was dismissed, conditional on his not being called upon for three months.

Gordon Hadfield was granted a sine die adjournment in respect of George Henry Mowbray, general farm hand. George Wylie, Pukerua Bay, citing also hardship, had his appeal in respect of his son, Hylton Wylie, dismissed with a proviso that he be not called up for three months. Phillip James Wall, Porirua, appealed in respect of one of two brothers, Raymond Lloyd James Wall, assisting him with his farm, was granted a sine die adjournment.

The appeal of Wilfred Robert Simpkiss, coal merchant, Lower Hutt, citing also hardship, who sought time to dispose of his business, was dismissed with a proviso that he not be called up for six months.
