Tin- decrease in the volume of road traffic over tlie Christmas holidayperiod, states the current Abstract of Statistics, may be gauged from the quantity of motor spirits released from bond. In December, 1939, when restrictions were removed, the quantity was 5.363.000 gallons, but in December, 1940, the amount dropped to 7,185,000 gallons. For the whole year 53,763,000 gallons was released, compared with 99,990.000 in 1939.
