Crops which are being raised in Napier to assist, in the scheme for greater war production have suffered from the depredations of thieves. A fine crop of pumpkins in Marewa, almost readyj for picking, was raided and be*ween 50 and t>o of the best speciments removed, others being smashed. The maize crop has also suffered, ripening cobs being torn from the plants, flowering stalks crus-hod and broken and the whole plants generally torn about. The Honorary Justices; Association has sent to the Palmerston North City Council a resolution drawing the attention ol the mayor to "the grave danger to lite ami property caused by grass fires and stating that one fire was caused by the neglect of the council in connexion with its own premises. Large Moth Hatched Out. An uncommon moth, not usually found in Hawke's Bay, was hitched out by Mr. E. C. Hurdsfield, agricultural instructor for schools in the province, at his home in Waipukurau. The insect, known as the Emperor Gum Moth, measures about four inches across the wings and belongs to the same family as the Japanese silkworm. The cocoon which held the moth was found on a pepper-tree near Wanganui in December. 1939, and took over a year to hatch. The cocoon was slightly larger limn a walnut, tied once the moth had emerged it developed rapidly to its full size. However, it died a few hours after liberation. Sometimes called the Australian silkworm, the caterpillar ot the gum moth produces a coarse, strong silk.
