]>ENE CLAIR. noted French director, who for Id years has spurned offers of American film producers, has at last made a Hollywood contract with the fuiversal Company. Clair's first American-directed picture will be "Tlie Countess of New Orleans.'’ the next Marlene Dietrich vehicle for I'niversal. to be made under Pasternak's personal supervision. Norman Krnsna. who wrote the Deanna Durbin film hit. “It's a Date." is writing tiie original screenplay for "The Countess of New Orleans." Rene Clair lias a long list of international successes to his credit, ineluding British as well as French productions. Rest known in this country, perhaps. for his "The Ghost Goes West," he is also the director of such memorable turns as "Rooftops of Paris." "Le Million." "A Nous l.a Liberte." and many others.
For Dietrich. "The Countess of New Orleans" follows her recently-com-pleted "Seven Sinners." which Luiversal [dans to release soon.
