BRACKEN
A Useful Mulch Brackett, that pest which so often dominates land which becomes neglected, is rich in plant fouls and growth substances. It provides a most beneficial summer mulch and i.s also a useful ingredient for incorporating in compost heaps. As it is more resistant to the action of- tlie bacteria which breaks down cellulose, it lakes longer to decompose than most vegetable tissues and should therefore be cut now for use next spring.
If incorporated in a mixed compost heap, bracken will he converted into humus in the course of about three months, Iml where no compost exists it should be ent and stacked in a spare corner of the garden or farm. Sprinkle each six-inch thickness with lime and keep it fairly moist. It will then be ready for use in the spring. The process of decomposition can lie accelerated by alternating file lime witli sulphate of ammonitr, but as bracken has an acid reaction the lime is essential.
