CROQUET TOURNEY 7

Championships Continued

YESTERDAY’S RESULTS

Stormy conditions prevailed all day yesterday, making it very difficult for accurate play in the croquet championships being held at the Hutt. Intermittent rain fell throughout the morning, ami was accompanied by a strong northerly wind, consequently games were somewhat prolonged. In the championship doubles event a thrilling finish was witnessed between Mesdames Cadwallader and Moeller, and E. Veitch and Mrs. Johnson. The latter pair had both clips on roverwhen the opponents had theirs on No. 5 and first return. In* endeavouring to peel at rover, Veitch used the wrong ball and suffered the usual penalty, having to retire. From then on the opponents made rapid progress, and eventually all four clips reached the peg. With Mesdames Moeller and Cadwallader in play the former, when separating, missed a medium roquet, and in the next turn the side failed to hit in, when Veitch finished, winning by the small margin of two points. A surprise victory was registered by Mesdames Bradley and Flint against Mesdames Small and Woodley in the club pairs. In and out play was a feature of the game, each player scoring in the turn. Botli Mrs. Flint and Mrs. Bradley were playing well, and the game was over in repord time with a score of 26-11.
