WILLING TO FIGHT CAPITALISTS
Socialist Objector
A Socialist objector, Owen H. Burnette, who appealed on conscientious grounds before the No. 4 Armed Forces Appeal Board in Wellington yesterday, said he would be quite prepared to fight in a war of labour against capital. His appeal was dismissed. Burnette said he saw in the present war the clash of capitalistic interests and the same envious glances of one nation at the trade of another. The only freedom to strive for was that of the masses from the economic oppression of capitalism. He refused to be the cause of making German or Italian wives widows and their children fatherless. He would not do anything to kill an enemy worker with perhaps the same hopes and ideals as himself. Appellant said he could not recognize the right of the board to judge his conscience. 'The chairman (Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M.) : If it was a war of labour against capital would you fight?—Definitely.
