PAY ROLL TO RACE AT NEW PLYMOUTH

Clinch Regaining Form

WAIRARAPA INCREASES EASTER STAKES (By St. Simon.) Pay Holl, the best two-year-old filly of the present season, has not r “e el * Sl ' lC “ finishing unplaced in the Wellington Stakes. Most likely her next public appearance will be in the Taranaki Stakes at New Plymouth next month.

For Te Arolia. , Riotous and Kaiwaka, who raced oiei hurdles at Egmont, are both entered tor hurdle events at Te Arolia next week. As Kaiwaka does not handle soil tracks well no opportunity will be lost of capitalizing on him during the autumn. Riotous looked in good bloom at Hawera, where he was ridden by an amateur. If appearances count for anything, this veteran jumper is not yet a spent force. Good Information. Off course fielders are usually well armed with information, and they certainly .were about one of yesterday s winners at Rotorua. They were politelydeclining investments on this particular horse for nearly two hours before the race was run. The good thing duly arrived.

False Backing.. Investors on the first day at Hawera were falling over each other to get on Ruapehu in the Trial Handicap, and she was made favourite on both machines. She looked big and ran greenly, at no stage justifying the support. Ruapehu is a chestnut four-year-old mare by Myosotis from Karioi, a half-sister by Tea Tray to Inflation, and is trained at New Plymouth by R. Johnson for Messrs. M. A. and J. T. Kennedy. Trentham Horses for North.

H. Telford contemplates taking Siglow

ami Parchment north for the M aikato and Te Arolia meetings.

Doing Taranaki Circuit. Mr. A. Rowan’s horses. Cheval de Voice, Cheval de Bataille, En Voice and Debauquer, competed at the Egmont meeting without success. They are remaining at New Plymouth to do the Opu; nake meeting this week, and the Taranaki centennial meeting early in March.

Recovering Form. , The dazzling run which Clinch put in to come from last and finish fourth three heads from the winner was one of the features of the Egmont Cup. It revealed that he is recovering from the effects of the fall he had in the Waikato Cup in the spring, and if he can reproduce Hawera form at Te Rapa he will be a good prospect for the Storey Memorial on Saturday.

Sprinters or Stayers? The progeny of Leighon have shown much natural speed, creating the impression that they are sprinters. Ihe running of Miss Leighon in the distance hack races at Egmont suggests that it trained for the task, the progeny ot Leighon will stay. There is no reason why thev should not. Leighon was by Gainsborough, a stayer himself rn.u sire of stayers, from a mare by Torloisa. who was a son of Gallinule. with Sterling. Stockwell and Hampton blood dominating his pedigree. Leighon s second dam. La«omedia, was by St. Serf (son ot St. Simon) from a mare by Hermit. Ims is nothing but staying blood. Stakes Increased. The Wairarapa Racing Club has increased the stakes for its Easter meeting bv nearly £5OO. The club will revert to'single pool betting for this meeting.

Gold Card’s Progress. The Pahiatua winner Gold Card ran two good races at Egmont, finishing fourth and fifth in the two events for hack stayers. On each occasion he jumped out veil. but was kept in a position where he was unable to make full use of his long stride, and he gradually was pushed back to the rear of the (field. He finished fast to make up ground both days. Gold

Card is a big liorse who will only show his best form on roomy tracks with long straights'. He is engaged at the Waikato and Te Arolia meetings.

Winner by Nightly. Nightray, winner of the Trial Handicap at* Egmont, is a three-year-old filly by Nightly from Lady Eka, and was bred bv her owner, Mr. T. Ash, Jun., ot liawera. She is typical of the breed, and has been well done. On the second day she got away badly. _ but finished on well just out of a place. Nightray has a good finishing run, and should appreciate something beyond a sprint distance.

Ktdlicker Hurdling. Rollicker made his debut as a hurdler at Egmont, finishing fourth to Kaiwaka, Dcbretts, and War Lap. His running was questioned by the stipendiary steward, who accepted the rider's explanation that the horse lost its position through lacking experience. He was not produced on the second day', but is engaged this week at Optinake.

Malinina, Improving. Mahaina, who now carries the same colours as Lexden, has shown improving form this season. On the first day at Egmont she ran a good second in a hack sprint, and on Saturday came from well back to run third in the Nolan Hack Cup. Mahaina was not quite at her physical peak, and may do better on the roomier course at Te Aroha. where she is engaged in the hack stayers’ races.

Answers to Correspondents. “J. 5. Pnremata: (1) £2/15/6. (2) £6/7/6. (3) £3/4/6. (4) £5/14/-. "P. 5. Wellington : Racing at Flemington is left-handed. "Sport,” Pahiatua: Bomber started in the Oak Handicap at Auckland on December 28. and was unplaced.
