ITALIANS SUFFER HEAVY LOSSES
Battlefield Strewn With Dead GREEK SUCCESS Forces Now Near Major Objectives (B.v Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Received January 9. 11 p.m.) ATHENS, January 8. Heavy losses were inflicted on the Italians when the Black Shirts attempted to counter-attack on the Albanian central front. They suffered one of the most complete defeats so tar, leaving the battlefield strewn with dead and wounded. The counter-attack sought to break through the Greeks, who were closing in at a certain point in a mountain pass near Kelcyra. The Greeks stopped the Black Shirts even before they had time to deploy for the engagement and the counter-attack was smashed after a short light. 1 hen the Greeks fixed bayonets and charged the Black Shirts as they fled' in very great disorder down steep mountain passes and through narrow gorges. The success has brought the Greeks near major objectives, where the Italian defence positions are concentrated.
A night Greek communique states that artillery and patrol activity caused the enemy heavy losses.
