The Egmont Racing Club will open its summer meeting today, with the featuie event the Egmont Cup, which has drawn a field of 11. The programme for presentation is interesting, fields being of good size and drawn from a wide area. "The Dominion's'' llawera correspondent advised last evening that the weather was favourable and that the track today would provide good going without any Friesland heads the Egmont Cup Handicap with 9.0, and he should appreciate the easing of the tracks. Hard going at Stratford at New Year told against him, but during the last week he has sprinted brilliantly in his work, returning last times for a stayer, which indicates that he is very fit. Dark Eagle has winning form at Awapuni and Ashhurst to support his claim, and he should be equal to carrying the extra weight. Cheval de Volee would only have to produce his best form to be the hardest horse to beat, but he has run moderately in three starts since failing by a head with 7.13 in the King George Handicap at. Avondale in. early November. Hunting Cat would have, a chance with 8.0 if he ran one of his good races, but he is unreliable. Clinch was a winner on his last visit to Hawera, but be has not done well since falling in the Waikato Cup in the spring. The fact that he is at the meeting indicates that he must be making some improvement. Ruatiti should beat those below him, but a surprise win is not beyond Homily, liastie and Mountain Fox. Gold Dale dominates the position m the Flying Handicap. He was not at his best when he won an open sprint at the Stratford New Year meeting, and should be more forward by now. Screen >-tar has no recent form, but he has often raced well when fresh up after, a spell and toughness is a characteristic ot ajl his performances. Tuatara is a smart sprinter, and Veldette and Valiant Fady both have winning performances at Ashhurst to recommend them. Valiant Dady may be reserved for a later, hack ®y Pnt ’ in which Cheval de Batailla is also likely to start. , The third open event today, is tn® Weraroa Handicap, a welter, in which Noble Fox, Red Cat, Olympus, Lord Cavendish, and Stencil, will all have a iollowing. Sporting Gift, on the minimum, is not without a chance, for he ran a good race fresh up at I’aliiatua after losing ground at the start. Kxiiwakfi ftiwl Aussie Ra. bjive the best form in the Ohawe Hurdles, in which the improvers may be Southern Blood and Resingold. There is little form to assist investors in the Trial Handicap, for which Valtour, Ocean Breeze, Miss-Hallomet, Night Kay and Minvaal will command the best following. ' Tf Air Flight is reserved for the Juvenile Handicap she should be Ihe favourite in spite of her big weight. Recently she has been showing improved form on the tracks. Star Mark is a recent winner, and of the remainder the best prospects appear to be Miss Hallomet, Barry Boy, Bark Light. Hard Frost and Battledress. Big fields are engaged in the two hack events. In Hie Toknora Handicap, Cheval de Bataille. Valiant Lady, IVaimiitu and Pretty Lass have the best, credentials, and in the AVaipapa Handicap for hack stayers A’enture and Gold Card stand out. Venture is not. a certain starter today. He may be reserved for the Nolan Cup on Saturday.
