STRAITS SETTLEMENTS WAR TAX
SINGAPORE, February 3. The Straits Settlements Legislative Council has passed a War Tax Bill with the object of Increasing contributions to the Imperial Exchequer for the prosecution of the war. The Bill imposes a direct tax on incomes of individuals, associations, and companies above 4800 dollars a year. The tax is on a graduated scale from 2 per cent, for 4800 dollars, rising to 8 per cent, for over 20,000 dollars. The tax is conservative!? estimated to yield 20,000,000 dollars in 1941.
