CROQUET TOURNEY
Three North Island Finals Decided Dominion Special Service. WANGANUI, January 17. Three finals were decided at the North Island croquet championships today, and resulted as follows:— Open Championship. —A. E. Voter (Wanganui) beat C. La Roche (Wanganui), 26-22, and 26-20. Women’s Championship.—Mrs. Bra,s (Wanganui) beat Mrs. Bryan (MellmgtoMen’s Handicap Singles.—W. F. Jarvie beat D. McClymont (both ot WanganlTlie_finai of the men’s singles championship will be played tomorrow. At the start of the open championship both La Roche and Ogier made good all round breaks. La Roche went to the peg wlt |i his other ball. On the penultimate Ogier hit in and pegged La Roche out. Having one to make with Ins backward bull La Roche missed, and Ogier finished in with bis next turn 26-22. In the second game Ogier got in and went to four back. La Roche failed to hit in, and (Kier went to rover with his second ball. I,a Roche then hit in, and went to rover, and after in-aiui-out play, Ogier hit in with the backward ball and peeled La Roche and pegged him out. La Roche eventually reached two back when the game finished in Ogier's favour 26-20. Mrs. Bryan was unable to counter Mrs. Brass's excellent long shots in the women’s final. Mrs. Brass got the feel of the lawn with the fourth ball for the first few hoops, and from this out dominated in all phases of the game, which she won without being extended. Both Jarvic and McClymont played consistently in the final of the men’s handicap singles, with Jarvie just having that, extra amount of finish which won him the game.
