MERCHANT NAVY

Outing To Maidstone Park

In brilliant sunshine on New Year’s Day, a successful picnic planned by the British Sailors’ Society took place in Maidstone Park for the men of the Merchant Navy, two full bus loads of picnickers travelling to the site. After games, lunch was served under the trees, and later the men enjoyed a ramble through the bush to the hilltop, where a beautiful view of the Hutt Valley and Hutt River was obtained. In the cool of the afternoon, tennis, tug-of-war, novelty games and races were held, prizes being distributed. About 7 p.m. the party returned to the rooms of the British Sailors’ Society. where a savoury evening meal was attractively served. Later a social evening was held.
