BEST JUVENILE

Route March Well Bred NOTES AND COMMENTS

Sale Of Sir Amyas

(By

The Watcher.)

Route March, who looks like being the best juvenile colt o£ the season so far, is a bay by Vaals from Royal March. He was bred by Messrs. H. T. Bowmar and G. A. Dodd, and is trained for Mr. S. J. Wood by F. Smith at Takanini. Route March belongs to one of the Dominion's most successful families. He is a halfbrother to Royal Appellant. His dam is by'Lucullus from March, dam also of Te Kara, Queen March, etc., the latter being a sister to Royal March.

Wellington Weights. Handicaps for the Wellington Cup and other events on the first day of the meeting are due on Tuesday.

Not So Good. One of the disappointments of the Auckland meeting was Belle Cane. That she should fail in the Railway .was hardly surprising, as that is a difficult race to win, but her form later at the meeting was distinctly below what her previous efforts had led us to expect.

Old Bill. Old Bill returned from Auckland immediately after the race for the Cup. It is not generally known that he was very lame on the eve of the Cup and was sore afterward. This is not advanced as an excuse for his defeat, but it probably prevented him from giving Beau Vite a harder race. He bruised a foot in his final gallop when he wrenched a shoe.

Bad Luck. . Globe Trotter was having hie first race since his successful visit to the New Zealand Cup meeting when he fell early in the running of the Marton Cup. It appeared at the time that he would be lame as a result of the fall, but it was reported later by his connexions that his condition showed great improvement.

Great Stamina. While Beau Leon was not equal to winning at Auckland he proved himself a great stayer, and he will be a fine horse with another year on to him.

Best Three-year-old. Kindergarten, who proved himself the best of the three-year-olds by his form during the holidays, is by Kincardine from Valadore, by Valkyri from Adornment, by The Nut—Elegance, by Seaton

Delaval—Antelope, by Apremont. Landslide and Refinement, good periormers a few years ago, were both out of Elegance.

Injured Jockey. When R. E. Humphries fell oft Globe Trotter in the Marton Cup he suffered a dislocation as well as a fracture.

Came Solid. Orelio was one of the outstanding performers of the Auckland meeting, a feature being the way he ran on more solidly than he did last year. Mr. T. Impey had spent a lot of money on horseflesh and it is pleasing to see him getting a return ■with a good horse.

Sir Amyas Sold. The four-year-old chestnut horse, Sir Amyas, has been sold by his ownertrainer, Mr. D. J. McDonald, Wingaiui, to Mr. George Tancred, Sydney. He will be raced at Trentham this month where he has been entered for the Wellington Cup and other leading handicaps, and trainer J. T. Jamieson will arrive here prior to the meeting to take him over. Gladynev Back. The Auckland-owned Gladyney, who has been in Australia for some time, arrived back yesterday and has gone out to Trentham. Gladynev will contest the Wellington Cup, in -which he was beaten into third place last year by Old Bill and Beau Vite. A good deal of Gladynev s form in Australia was moderate, but he was only beaten in the last strides of the Caulfield Cup by Beaulivre.

Tribute To President. As a mark of appreciation for the hospitality accorded them, visiting owners, trainers and horsemen at the Auckland Trotting Club’s jubilee meeting, which was concluded on Tuesday, made a presentation to the president, Mr. E. G. Bridgens, of a barograph. The presentation was made by the Hon. P. G. Webb, who referred to the fine work, of Mr. Bridgens in connexion with trotting and his popularity with all sections of the sporting fraternity.

Double Success. Double wins by stable horses were much in evidence on New Year’s Day. Synthetic won two races at Wairarapa, Ringcraft and Curtail won at Marton, and Red Cat and Scandal at Stratford. Native Chief and Kindergarten also won for their owner, though at different meetings.

His First Win. Lady Acora, the Marton juvenile winner, was bred by Mr. A. T. Gatrell, who sold her to Mr. H. T. Whale. This was Mr. Whale’s first winner. He originally owned Wings of Song, who wm purchased after a few races in Mr. Whale s colours, by Mr. T. A. Duncan.

G.N. Derby. The failure of the visiting three-year-olds in the Great Northern Derby does not show up the New Zealand Derby form in a very favourable light. It cannot be that the form of Enrich, Sir Beau and Belle Cane has deteriorated so much, as their trainers were well satisfied with their progress.

Asbhurst Nominations. Nominations for the annual meeting of the Ashhurst-Pohangina Racing Club, to be held on Anniversary Day, will close on Monday at 9 p.m.
