TUDOR THEATRE
“Tom Brown’s School Days,” now being shown at. the Tudor Theatre, is a remarkably strong and faithful film presentation of a deservedly famous book. It deals with the makings of a great public school, and the life work and sltccess of a world-famous schoolmaster, Dr. Thomas
Arnold. Sir Cedric Hardwicke takes the part of Dr. Arnold, in a performance of sterling merit, but the film gains most in stature and entertainment from the acting of the schoolboys themselves—with special credit going to Jimmy Lydon, a newcomer, who plays the part of Tom Brown. The strange loyalties and the artful pranks of the schoolboy are so well recaptured that those who remember their schooldays will find the film all too ■short. There is something very absorbing. too, in traditions of the old English school, and it is a pleasure to see the characters of Thomas Hughes’s classic come to life. About a girl who decides on the eve of her wedding that she cannot go through with it and seeks refuge in a ‘stranger's motor-trailer, “Cross Country Romance” is the hilarious associate feature-length attraction. STATE THEATRE, PETONE Leading dramatically Io its climax — 'I hernias Alva Edison's lighting of New York by electricity—" Edison the Man" was loudly acclaimed when yesterday released on a short season at the State Theatre, Petone. Spencer Tracy's portrayal of Edison is admirable.
