Islands In Cook Group RAROTONGA, January 1. A strong gale swept Penrhyn Island on December 29 and blew down approximately one-third of the houses in the Omoka village and two-thirds of them in the Tetautau village. Many coconut trees were destroyed, but there was no loss of life. The gale has now subsided and the island, although damaged, is in fairly good shape. The lowest reading of the barometer during the gale was 28.7 inches. Suwarrow Island experienced a wind of hurricane force last night, with heavy seas -and .continuous rain, but all on the island lire safe and the wind has subsided. A gale is blowing at Palmerston Island today, and there are heavy seas at Rarotonga, but the other islands are normal.
