SHOPS OPEN AGAIN
Many People In Wellington Streets FAIRLY BRISK BUSINESS Wellington shops reopened yesterday after the holidays with a day of fairly brisk business. There was a large number of people about the city. Business offices for the most part' remained closed, or opened with skeleton staffs only. The usual Friday late shopping hours were not observed last evening. Shopkeepers expressed surprise at the crowds in the city yesterday. A portion comprised visitors to 'Wellington taking the opportunity to explore shopping facilities. There were many country people who had run into town for the' day, but the majority of yesterday’s shoppers appeared to be 'Wellington folk —suburban wives replenishing their holiday stores, ir few late giftbuyers, and some of the many who spent Christmas at home this season simply going about the town in their ordinary way.
The single shopping day coming between the holiday and the weekend made it the only opportunity for many people to purchase necessities, and this too contributed to the liveliness of the streets yesterday. It is likely that a similar effect will be noticeable next week, when similar arrangements will be observed.
Shops will open as usual this morning and on Monday and Tuesday, which will be a late shopping night. On Wednesday and Thursday the shops will be closed, reopening next Friday and Saturday. After that, the normal routine of the city will start.
