Tokio Sees Challenge

TOKIO, December 8.
"Such a loan is tantamount to challenging war with Japan,” declares the newspaper “Hochi Shimbun,” commenting editorially on the United States decision to grant China a loan of 100,000,000 dollars. “It is like throwing bombs against the foundation work for the establishment of a new order in East Asia and has given an unpleasant and unforgettable impression to the Japanese people,” the paper adds.
Vice-Admiral Bosbiro Ilosogaka lias been appointed supreme commander of the Japanese fleet in South China waters, succeeding Vice-Admiral Umataro Tanimoto, who has been assigned to the -general staff of the navy. Vice-Admiral Tanimoto will have an audience with the Emperor, on Tuesday regarding the activities of the Japanese fleet in South China waters.
PROTECTION FOR SHIPPING
Activity At Singapore
(Received December 8, 9.40 p.m.) SINGAPORE, December 7.
The harbour board reports that since the outbreak of the war more than 300,000 tons of shipping have been Degaussed and nearly 100 oceangoing ships defensively armed. Degaussing is increasing and equipment for anti-submarine operations is being manufactured by mass production. Many anti-submarine vessels are being constructed. The board has presented two to the Admiralty.
