ROWING REGATTA POSTPONED
The Norton Cup Fixture STAR AND WELLINGTON HOLD CLUB RACES Though the water at the Wellington end of the harbour was ideal' for rowing on Saturday afternoon, the Norton Cup Regatta had to be postponed because conditions were unfavourable at Betone. In past years, the Wellington Rowing Association has had alternative courses', but because this season the wharves are closed to the public, it was decided to hold the regatta on the Koro Koro course, ana, in the event of a southerly making the water unrowable there, to postpone the races till December 14. Both the Star and Wellington clubs took advantage of the water, and the full attendance of members to hold club races. Star Club. The Senior Fours, over one mile and a quarter, for the J. 11. Cock Cui>, resulted: A. I. Orr (str.), J. Aloleta (3), G. A. Turner (2), J. S. Cowles (bow) ... 1 J. Columb (str.), J. Coates (3), N. Al. Rose (21, E. G. Webb (bow) 2 G. C. Broad (str.), W. Fl. llatvker (3), 1.. D. Tapp (2), I’. Al. Taylor (bow) 3 .Also started: J. F. Ashby (str.), S. G. Sldford 13), .8. 1. Kidd (2), W. Young (bow), and 11. W. Bevan (str.), J. E. Gilbertson (3). 11. A. Lowe <2l. G. Jones (bow). The crews kept fairly close together for about half the race, but then Orr’s crew ad Columb's crew drew away from the others. In a good finish, Orr’s crew beat Columb’s crew by half a length, with Broad’s crew a length farther back. Ashby’s crew was close up fourth and Bevan’s crew last. Wellington Club. The Wellington club’s first club race lor the season, the Britannia Fours, over a mile, was won by A. It. Nicholson's crew after elose contests in the heats and the linal. Results are:— FIRST HEAT. Tail (bow) 3 In an exciting tiulsli Taylor's crew, getting in an extra stroke, won by little more than a fool from Fish’s crew. U’,Donnell's crew, when going well in the lead, broke a stretcher near the start, but carried on for half a mile. SECOND HEAT. A. It. Nieholsott (str.), E. Boivin (3), D. Mahoney (2), J. Nicholson’s crew rowed strongly to win by three-quarters of a length from Rolander's crew, with Manning's crew several lengths farther back. .Manning's crew who drew the middle [msitioii. lost a good two lengths when they had Io stop after both the oilier crews had come in on them. They went well when they got going again and would have been closer at the linish but for catching a crab. FINAL: Xidiolsuu's crew J Tavlor's crew - Rowing much better than in their heat Nicholson's crew scored a well-deserved win ill the final. They began part ienhtrly well ami quickly opened up a break ol about a length, which they did not surrender. winning liualiy by a length and a half.
