PROPOSED FIGHT

Maurice Strickland And Alabama Kid

COUNCIL’S ATTITUDE

Certain conditions would have to be fulfilled before the contest could be held, said Mr. G. P. Aldridge, secretary of the New Zealand Boxing Council, yesterday, referring to the report: from Auckland stating that negotiations were proceeding to match Maurice Strickland and Alabama Kid at Palmerston North on Box* ing Day- , , Mr. Aldridge said that the council would have to be certain that its rules were strictly observed and would insist, for instance, that the purse was divided on the basis of 60 per cent, to the winner and 40 per cent to the loser. Auother point in connexion with the purse was that permissibn would have to be obtained for giving a sum greater than the limit imposed by the rules tin the ease of an imported boxer, z.LOO plus £4O expenses). , Another important. point was that ttie Manawatu association would have .to take full responsibility for the staging of the contest and could not delegate its powers to anybody else. The association, of course, would have to see that the levies upon the boxers’ winnings ami the' takings at the gate provided lor under the rules were paid to the council. Air. Aldridge said that no application for the staging of the bout had yet been received and till permission had been given the bout could not take place. MANAGER’S COMMENT Mr. C. Lucas, the Australian promoter and manager, commenting yesterday on the Auckland message, said that the nglit had not been definitely arranged, and, iu view of the Auckland report, it was actually more doubtful than it had been, llie reference to £l5O for Alabama Kid, lose, or draw, did not correctly state the position in respect of the purse. The position in respect pt the purse, said Mr. Lucas, was that the Manawatu association intended to apply to the. New Zealand Boxing Council for permission to give a larger purse than that provided for under the rules. This was in accordance with the rules, which made provision for special circumstances. Mr. Lucas had no doubt that all the councils rules would be observed by the Alan awatu association. Mr. Lucas said Hint Alabama Kid had arrived in Wellington, and that negotiations in connexion with the contest were proceeding.
