A husband’s unsuccessful attempts to obtain from the Te Aro I’ost Office maiaddressed to his wife, from whom he is living apart, led to the appearance in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday, before Mr. Stout, S.M., of William John Knowles on four charges of attempting to induce a post office! to deliver a postal packet not intended for him. He pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant. W. McLennan said Knowles and bis wife were separated and there had been a great deal of family trouble. Knowles went to Te Aro I’ost: Office and presented notes purporting to be signed, by his wife, but there happened to be no mail for her. . Mr. W. I*. Rollings, who appeared for Knowles, said I lie parties were nol formally septirated but they were not living together. The wife had endeavoured to obtain separation orders, but two summonses had been struck out for want of prosecution, ami a third had been dismissed. Knowles had instituted divorce proceedings against his wife, but they had not been gone on wit It. as (lie parties had come together again, but they now lived 3t different addresses. Knowles came quite properly into possession of letters addressed to bis wife in affectiottaie terms from men who signed themselves “Doug,” "Arthur” and “Lon,” and it was for that reason llmt lie laid endeavoured to intercept his wife’s correspondence. _ , The magistrate imposed a line ot 1on the first chtirge as tt warning io Knowles, and lie was vonvieled and (Uncharged on the oilier charges.
