PARADE OF FASHIONS

Large Crowds At Trentham

SECOND DAY OF SPRING MEETING The sight of the sun ou Saturday morning must have cheered many intending racegoers, who were looking forward to line weather for the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting at Trentham. Their hopes were fulfilled and a very large crowd enjoyed the meeting under pleasant conditions. Ou the lawns the warmth of the sun tempted many to linger and, against the background of perfect green trees, well-kept lawns and flower beds which were a riot of colour, women patrons were able to display smart spring fashions. Highlights in style belouged to the hats, many of them being triumphant confections of frothy veiling and flowers, accentuated boater, coachman or bowler designs, or merely one or two large flowers tilted forward aud secured to the head with a bandeau. One attractive girl wore what seemed at first glance to be a small cloud of midnight blue veiling ou her head. In reality it was a tiny chapean completely twisted in the veiling. A wellknown visitor from Auckland had a tiny circlet of small blue flowers attractivelv perched on her sleek, fair page-boy coiffure. A white legionnaire cap looked well with ’ the white and ntsvy suit chosen by one regular wellknown patron. White aud black or navy was smart in the small hats which seem so popular this season.

Soft greys and blues were first favourites for ensembles and frocks with black and dusty pink close seconds. There was a dove grey suit with fluelypleated skirt, worn with a grey felt hat, its cherry-coloured band matching the’ heels of the wearer’s grey suede shoes. Daffodil yellow combined with grey was smart on youthful wearers, one fair girl adding a boxed yellow jacket to .her grey skirt and topping it with a high grey pillbox hat; another secured her small grey hat with a wide head band of yellow and grey taffeta, making a bow behind. _As usual silver fox furs gave a luxuriant finish to the ever popular black toilettes, .that are flattering to both young and older women. Accessories were elaborate and often novel. A spectacular lei of white coral flowers added distinction to the neck of a black frock; handbag's were capacious affairs mostly carried out in suede or patent leather, and gloves, sometimes two-toned, matched the colour schemes iu many cases of frock and hat. The president of the 'Wellington Racing Olub, Air. Erie Riddiford, and Mrs. Riddiford, were present. Airs. Riddiford wore a smart black tailored frock beneath a three-quarter length coat of summer ermine and a boater hat of chartreuse felt finished with a large black bow. For those who brought picnic lunches, it was very pleasant being able to enjoy a rest and refreshments out in the open. Hot water was provided iu the car parking enclosures round the course and the extra tearoom accommodation was taxed all day with customers. Applause greeted many of tlm items provided by the Trentham Military Band, who'played and sang a number of popular tunes, much to the delight of the crowd, which listened with close attention.
