EGGS FOR BRITAIN

Gift From New Zealand

Producers SHIPPING SPACE PROBLEM The action of the New Zealand people who assisted with its supply and collection of eggs as a gift to the United Kingdom was commended yesterday by the Minister of Marketing, Mr. Nash. He said that because of the difficulties of obtaining suitable shipping space only a limited quantity of eggs was exported to the United Kingdom this year. Included in the shipment which bad just left New Zealand was a quantity of 20,000 eggs forwarded from producers as a free gift to the people of Lhe United Kingdom. The gift of these eggs, which came chiefly from the Hawke’s Bay district, was due mainly to the initiative and assistance of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union and women’s institutes, said the Minister. The Government, through the Internal Marketing Division, arranged for the handling, packing and shipment of the eggs, and the High Commissioner for New Zealand in London would hand the gift over to the. British authorities for free distribution among Red Cross societies, hospitals or other kindred institutions.

“No doubt,” said Mr. Nash, “these eggs’ will be very much appreciated by the people of the United Kingdom, and on behalf of the New Zealand Government, I wish to thank the many people who have assisted with the supply and collection of the eggs. “Indications are that many more eggs would have been forwarded by producers if suitable shipping space were available, bur It is not now possible to export further gifts of eggs this season. However, the quantity forwarded, small as it may seem, will be very much appreciated by the British Government as indicative of New Zealand’s desire to assist.”
