OBITUARY

Mi’S. E. Averill A long residence in New Zealand was brought to an end with the death of Mrs. Norah Averill, wife of Mr. Edward Averill, Echills, Kereru, says a “Dominion” Special Service message from Hastings. She was born in Canada in 1868 and came to New Zealand as a child with her parents. After her marriage she lived in the Waikato with her husband, who managed a large station on behalf of the Assets and Realization Board. Later Mr. and Mrs. Averill went to Hawke’s Bay, where Mr. Averill was appointed to control Mangatoro Station. Then in 1915 came the final change of residence, when Mr. Averill took over the management of Olrig Station and also acquired a large sheepfarm of his own. Mrs. Averill was a true countrywoman who loved her garden, her animals, and all that pertained to country life. She leases her husband and three sons, Messrs. Cecil and Morris Averill, both of Kereru, and Mr. L. R. Averill, Maraekakaho. Tlie eldest son, Mr. Eric Averill, was an officer in the Indian Army and was killed in the Moplah rebellion some 12 years ago.

Mrs. J. Bicknell

The death has occurred of Mrs. Kate Annie Bicknell, widow of the late Mr. John Bicknell, Puketapu, aged 76, says a "Dominion” Special Service message from Hastings. Mrs. Bicknell was born in Oxford, England, and arrived in New Zealand in 1870. She spent the early years of her life in Otane, where at the age of 20 she was married. After her marriage she went with her husband to Puketapu and has lived there ever since. She is survived by one son, Mr. Frederick Bicknell. Puketapu, and one daughter. Mrs. T. Whittle, Puketitiri.

Air. E. S. Lancaster

The death occurred in Levin this week of Mr. Ernest Samuel Lancaster at the age of 72. A member of a family that has done much to maintain and improve the Jersey herds of New Zealand, Mr. Lancaster lived in the Levin district for more than 50 years, and saw the district change from ■sawmilling to one of the best dairying areas in the Dominion. Mr. Lancaster was a member of the Levin Borough Council in the days when the borough initiated a high pressure water scheme and municipal gas works. For many years he was a prominent member of tlie Masonic fraternity and was a pastmaster of Lodge Horowhenua. Tramping was one of his hobbies, and he was among the earliest to explore the Tararuas. His zeal for tramping led to the formation of tramping clubs in the district. He was also interested in tree planting, and the many trees gracing the streets Of Levin are a monument to him.

His wife predeceased him a few weeks ago. Mr. Lancaster is survived by one daughter, Mrs. A. Smith, Palmerston North, and 1 two grandchildren.
