GUINEAS DAY

Wellington Sprin g Meeting SOME FRESH HORSES Watkins And Awatea Handicaps

(By

The Watcher. )

There is every chance that changed going will affect form at Trent ham today, for the second day’s racing at the spring meeting of the Wellington Racing Clun. In addition to the rain brought up by the northerly gale, the cold change to southerly yesterday brought further ram. The forecast is for improving weather, ami it will probably clear, but the track wiil take a lot of drying before the going becomes firm again. It is unlikely, however, that it will be heavy. Fields have thinned out a little, but tiiey are good, and keen racing should be witnessed.

The principal race today will be me three-year-old classic, the Wellington Guineas. A good field is engaged, including the Avondale and Great Northern Guineas winners, Beau Leon and Sir Cameron. For the handicap horses the main races are the Watkins and the Awatea handicaps. Recollection is a likely fresh liorse in the hurdles, but the form of Esperance Bay entitles him to consideration again, while ou first day’s running Dorado, Great Fair, and Son and Heir all have chances.

There is a big field in the Trial Stakes. Public form points to Gold Court, Sir Rabbi, Social Credit, Cheerful Lady, Grand Chase, and Belle Cane. The latter’s easy win at the Wanganui meeting last start was impressive. Bean Leon may be favourite for the Guineas, but while it may be admitted Sir Cameron was a trifle lucky to beat him at Ellerslie, the latter is a good galloper. Kentucky has a chance if started, but he may run again in the sprint. Lambourn will be fancied on his Masterton form, and Sir Beau has to be given a chance to redeem himself. He had a sore foot at Auckland. There are several hacks in the Heretaunga Handicap with good prospects, aud they include most of the top half o. the handicap. Lower down Airline, Dranoel, and Gold Bridge look the likeliest.

Par Avion and Flying Spray have the form among the two-year-olds in the Karitane Handicap, but there should be some improvers.

The Watkins Handicap is not particularly strong apart from the topweights. Both Amigo and Sly Fox look sure to run well again. The distance might be thought beyond xlmigo, but. he ran a creditable fourth in the Racing Club Handicap here iu January, 1939, over the same journey. Trench Law, Little Robin, and Ned Cuttie did best of the others on the first day, and Ned Cuttie will appreciate a soft track. Areas might do better if ridden in behind. There is again a strong sprint, field, and it includes a fresh topweight in Density, a good Treutham performer who will have a lot of friends after her good race a 'Washdyke last Saturday. Nigger Boy is a form horse, as also are Orelio, Night Eruption aud Kentucky. Two good fresh prospects are Black Robe who won at Stratford, and Not Out. Improvement may soon be expected from Mittie and Brouwcn, and Endorsement was fairly handy nt the end on Thursday. Duvach will appeal in the last race with a strong horseman. Siglow’s chance is not the best unless the going is firm, but Gayest Son is a definite prospect on his Masterton form. The July winner, Poutatau, is making his reappearance, and he impressed then as a galloper above the ordinary. The tailenders are not impressive, but Stencil and Airline may improve, and Caution was a winner nt Otaki. Dragon was confidently supported at Masterton, and she may run up to her track reputation. Tlie following horses may he supported in their engagements:— Rimu Hurdles. —Recollection and Esperance Bay.
