LORD BEAVERBROOK QUOTED

Compulsion In War Finance

The views of the British Minister of Aircraft Production, Lord Beaverbrook, on war finance were quoted by Mr. Robertson (Government, Masterton) in reply to the speech of Mr. Doidge (Opposition, Tauranga). Referring in August to the response to the appeal to the public to take up the 21 per cent, war bonds voluntarily, Lord Beaverbrook was reported to have said: “If the big men will not respond to the Chancellor's appeal to their patriotism, lie must get their cash by means of a capital levy. If they wont give, he must take.” Mr. Robertson said Mr. Doidge had eulogized the financial strength of the British Empire and inferred that all the useful people of the Empire were the moneyed people. Mr. Holland (Opposition, Christchurch North) : He said nothing of the sort. Mr. Doidge: What an imagination you have. Mr. Holland : What a mind.
