Neither side was at full strength, University having eight regulars away, but the promoted players shaped ’ Hutt dominated possession, having a much heavier scrum and Burke being an absentee from University. Hutt also dominated the rucks and the backs turned on some bright movements, Evans am Burton, the live-eighths, being in good form. Graham also gave a hue display at full-back. . Patrick and Kissell were Universitys soundest backs. Parker, down on holiday from Dannevirke, also went well and Shaw revealed marked pace on the wing, scoring one line try. Greig was solid at full-back. His goal kicking was good, but he had little luck. For Hutt, Witcher and Clarke scored. Evans converted one and kicked a penalty goal. Graham potted a field goal. For University Kissel, Duncan and Shaw scored, Greig converting two tries. Referee: Mr. B. Matthews. SECOND DIVISION TRIAL GAME To give thp sole selector, Mr. A. J. ■’McDonald, the opportunity of watching their form for possible representative selection, two, teams selected from the senior second division met in the curtainraiser at Athletic Park on Saturday. Injuries caused many replacements and also disorganized the teams, forwards having to fill the role of backs. There were some bright patches, but generally speaking, the football was of very, mediocre quality. Players who impressed were Godber (Athletic) and Barnao (Marist Bros. O.B.) in the forwards, and L. Thomas, C. Thomas (Onslow) and McMahon (Pirates) in the backs. Rouxel, the big Pirates forward, filled the role of fiveeighths for part of the game, and scored a try. The No. 2 team won 16-14, Bowden (2) and Rouxel scoring tries. Potior converted two and kicked a penalty goal. For the No. 1 team Barnao (2), Pilalis and C. Thomas scored, Barnao converting one try.
