R.A.F. REPLIES

Bombers Attack Nazi Batteries RED GLOW IN SKY Intense Anti-Aircraft Fire Met (British Official Wireless and Press Assn.) LONDON, August 23. While the shelling of the Kentish coast was proceeding a parachute flare which appeared over the French coast signalled the opening ot the R.A.F. reply, which was pressed home with great vigour. Detonations were heard on the English coast, and from Calais to Boulogne a red glow in the sky and low down on the waterline indicated the effectiveness of the counterattack.

The Air Ministry states that gun emplacements on the French coast between Calais and Boulogne were heavily attacked by R.A.F. bombers last night, after a convoy had been shelled in the Channel. 4 he British aircraft encountered intense antiaircraft lire, but maintained the attack for several hours. Cap Gris-Nez, between Calais and Boulogne, was one of the objectives of R.A.F. bombers which almost immediately went up to counter the German bombardment of Dover on Thursday night. High-explosive and incendiary bombs were dropped on battery positions.

As they approached, the French coast some of "the R.A.F. aircraft were met by intense anti-aircraft fire. One of them was singled out by German fighters, which tried io intercept. The pilot succeeded in shaking them otf and flew on to bomb enemy batteries. Counter-attacking wont on for many hours.

The first of the bombers was over (lie objective soon after 9.30 o’clock on Thursday night. Others took up the attack at intervals till at 3.35 o’clock on Friday morning further salvos ot heavy and incendiary bombs were launched at an enemy gun.

Battery positions near Auden burg and St. Inglevert in the same area were also bombed.

There is great satisfaction in the Press that retaliatory action by the R.A.F. against the German long-range batteries on the French coast was so swift and formidable. Unconfirmed news reports say that Thursday’s shattering six-hour attack by R.A.F. bombers was renewed last night.
