Knock-out Competition MIRAMAR BEAT NEWTOWN In the semifinal of the Wellington Rugby League’s knock-out competition at Newtown Park on Saturday afternoon, Miramar beat Newtown by 16 points to S. The game started at a fast pace, both teams throwing the ball about freely. Newtown attacked early, but a good kick by Askew brought play to Newtown’s twenty-live, where Bernecker was penalized for not playing the ball, and Askew goaled with a good kick. Newtown’s pack, strengthened by _ Inward, a 15-stone player from the Air Force, and “Snowy” Pearce, a newcomer to the League, were getting the bull from most of the serums, and Geary, the Newtown half, sent his backs going frequently. Miramar, at this stage, were defending stoutly, but Askew picked up and handed to Crothers, who ran from his .own twenty-five line to score a sensational try which Scott failed to improve, brom a penalty kick, McDonald (Miramar) followed up fast, and scored a good try, Scott again missed the kick at . goal. Beaton (Newtown) saved a certain try when he chased Elworthy, and brought his man down live yards from the goallino. The score at the end of the first spell was: Miramar S: Newtown 0. Play continued fast in the fs t’s° n< | spell. Newtown attacked, but S. Mood (Miramar) picked up, and, cutting out two men, handed on to Bouzaid, who ■ raced over for a try between the posts, which Askew converted. Newtown now sparkled up, and Bericker, who was playin- a great game, secured possession, and baltled his ‘way through the Miramar bucks to score in the corner. Brown s kick missed.
