WELLINGTON BEAT MANAWATU
Men’s Hockey Match HOME SIDE’S FORM NOT HOPEFUL Though Wellington beat Manawatu 4-1 in a representative men’s hockey match at. Karori Park on Saturday, the form shown by the home team was not such as to excite high hopes for their success iu next Saturday’s match. They will have to show greatly improved teamwork if they are to heat Auckland. Wellington were slow off the mark. Manawatu opened with several clean open passing movements, one of which culminated in H. Laurie scoring. The ground was in fairly good order, but soft with the previous night’s rain, and after a short time became increasingly greasy. As a result the stiekwork of both teams was brighter in the early phases than later in the game. Perhaps to some extent this explained the speculative and inaccurate passing and the number of infringements which were features unusually in evidence for a representative match. It was notable that the umpiring was particularly satisfactory. Wellington soon showed up in a series of hard attacks, mostly individual, but characterized by the excellent followingup and supporting of the forwards by the halves. R. Neate played a hard and vigorous game, and was outstanding throughout. AA'cllutn and Russell also showed up. Neate opened the scoring for AA’ellington with a smart shot from a scuffle in the circle, and soon afterward Wcllum took a centring pass from tho wing and slammed it into the net. AVellington were thus leading by a, goal nt half-time. From then on Wellington’s superiority became increasingly evident, but a number of hard attacks broke on the sound defensive play of M. Byers, tiie iAlanawatu full-back, and L. Hart their All Black goalkeeper. J. Beals and H. Laurie, in the forwards, and I. Davies, at half-back, were their outstanding players. Russell shot a narrow-nngle goal from close in to the net early in the second half. Then taking the ibnM from nearly half-way in a brilliant solo run, Neate tricked Byers and carried the Ml into the circle. lie made a fine net shot, which Hart was unable to smother. There was no further score, though twice 'Wellington went very near it — once when a forward who had worked into a perfect scoring position played an air shot, and once when a particularly good passing movement culminating in a bright shot was spoiled by an infringement.
