HOCKEY ON SKATES
Wellington Championship
This week’s play in the Wellington skate hockey championship resulted in a win for Cyclones against Pirates, 2-1, and a drawn game between Civic and Lions, 1-1. • ‘ The long-awaited clash between Cyclones and Pirates was spoilt by Pirates having to play a man short, and in a five-man! team one player makes a big difference. Cyclones seemed to take things easily for a time, but when they realized Moir and Robertson were making the most of every opportunity, play livened up considerably, and just before half-time Stoddart scored his first goal of the season, when he goaled from close in front. This.was probably Stoddart’s last game this season, as he is going into camp next week! Pirates made a great attempt to score early in the second spell, but could not finish off when they reached the goal-mouth. Lockerbie, showing up well on the wing, scored Cyclone’s second goal, after Dodson, the Pirates’ goalie, had repelled them time and again. In the last few minutes of play, Moir dashed up the wing and centred to Robertson, who scored with a snap shot to make the final score: Cyclones 2, Pirates 1. Pla’yers to show up in this match were R. Lockerbie and G. Burtenshaw (Cyclones), and B. Dodson (Pirates). The other match had hardl begun when Stevens drove hard for the net, and appeared to score, but the goal-umpire ruled no-goal, and a 25-yard bully was taken. Play was fast and open, with Civic having tho advantage territorially, but half-time was called with no score. A. Reade opened the scoring soon after the change-over. Receiving the ball at half-way, he moved down the left wing, and, with a quick swing into the centre, he cut out the opposing full-back, and netted with a hard drive, which gave the goalie no chance. Lions’ equalizer was scored by Whittington, who, after taking a penalty shot, caught the ball on the rebound, and made no mistake with his second shot. Civic attacked strongly in the closing stages, with Stevens putting in. some great shots, but they could not score, and the game ended with the score unchanged. The outstanding players in this match were Husband and Musgrove (Lions) and Manson and Reade (Civic). Stevens, the Civic captain, played his best game Ibis season, and was unlucky in not. opening his scoring account. Finding Team to Meet Auckland.
