RICCARTON NOTES

Leopardstown Jumps Well Dominion Special Service. CHRISTCHURCH, August 23. Leopardstown gave some interest to . work at Riccarton this morning, when G. Ridgway rode him over four hurdles, bowling along at a strong pg.ee. His jumping was good. He has done a good deal of schooling at different times, but this was his first outing for some months. It is probable that he will be raced over hurdles at Ashburton and Geraldine, before haviug a spell. Spartan shaped well in his first turn over the pony hurdles, and T. 11. Gillett will continue during the next few weeks witli his education as a jumper. IL and A. Cutis have started to sprint the three-year-old Shikari. He developed good form in the autumn, and was kept going on useful exercise through the winter, so is well forward for spring engagements. Wild Fox, in the same stable, has grown since she raced last season, and may make a useful three-year-old. Though he lias done no work on the tracks lately, the three-year-old Atreus has had plenty of road exercise in the last month or two. After this treatment he should come to hand quickly, when J. C. Tomkinson starts to sprint him.

F. A. Roberts has Capricious back in the stable, and the Night Raid mare looks in excellent health to start a preparation for the New Zealand Cup, in which she filled second place hist year. Gold NuggeL a three-ycar-old by Iliad, is another in Roberts’s stable who has resumed work. He had some jogging on the roads during the winter, and should come to hand quickly. When previously in training he showed plenty of speed. Not Out has done some useful work lately, and should be a good prospect for the November meeting at Riccarton. He may be given his first race at Ashburton, with a trip to Trentham in view after that.

G. A. Withers has made another start with The Sandwich Man, but it will need some time to get him into racing condition, as he has lightened up during his spell.
