JUBILEE YEAR

Wairarapa Racing Club NOTES AND COMMENTS

The Watcher.)

i By

Though racing has been going on at Tauherenikau since 187-1, this year the club will celebrate its fiftieth birthday, having in November, 1890, emerged from the amalgamation of the old Wairarapa Jockey Club and South Wairarapa Racing Club, and the first meeting of the new elub was held at Tauherenikau on January 1, 1891. Of all the stewards and officers elected at that meeting, only one is still alive, an old member, and for some years caretaker, Sir. Josias Tocker, who wiw clerk of the.course. Over the half century the elub has had five presidents: J. P. Russell. 1890/190(5; 11. S. Wardell, 1906/1912; W. E. Bidwill, 1912/1933; Q. Donald, 1933/1938; J. W. Card. 1935. Mr. Russell was president of the old Jockey Chib at the inaugural meeting at Tauherenikau in 1874. and Mr. Wardell honorary secretary.

Team Doing Well. A. V. Webster with Perfect Idea, won the hurdle race at Moonee Valley, and the Novice Handicap at Bacchus Marsh with Cymnotus. Writing from Mentone, Webster states that all his horses are well, and their prospects bright. Webster also scored another win recently with Glaciate, who was narrowly beaten in his latest engagement on Saturday. Tuki’s National.

Talking about dreams, a Nelson correspondent, Po Ata Rau, sends along the following:—A week or so before Tuki won the National, I dreamt I saw the finish, did not recognize the horse, but noticed the colours of the rider, looked up the register, and found they were the colours of Tuki’s owner. A few days before the event, I was travelling by train from Napier to Wellington, and in the carriage there were many going to the National meeting, and quite a few I knew. The National was discussed, and I told my dream, and was laughed to scorn. One man, who owned a horse in the race, said that Tuki was probably the least likely of any horse to win. However, when parting at the Wellington railway station, one lady in the party told me that she would back my dream, which she did. I had £3 on. and got a very nice dividend. Musket Blood.

A representative of the Musket line, and a great-grandson of Carbine, in Saleve, is at the services of breeders in the Taranaki district this season. Spion Kop won the Derby, and sired Felstead, sire of the great filly Rockfel, and Spion Kop also sired The Buzzard, who has left some of the best stayers Australia has had in recent years, and one of whose sons, The Buzzer, won the Auckland Cup, and was narrowly beaten by Arctic King in the New Zealand Clip. Saleve’s dam, Skein Dhu, also represents a very stout staying line, being by Battleaxe (by William the Third, one of the greatest sons of St. Simon) from Cairles, by Lesterlin, by Gallinule.
