NEW CALF FEEDING METHODS
The feeding of skim milk alone cannot be expected to produce the early maturing disease-free herd, and the use of MOOSE MEAL as a supplement is recommended for ensuring proper growth and disease resistance. Eed in correct quantities Moose Linseed Oil Meal is the ideal calf food. Moose is rich in fat, rich in digestible protein and has the minimum of indigestible fibre. SKIM MILK. At two weeks of age a small propotrion of the whole milk can be replaced by skim milk and a trace of Moose Meal added as a supplement to make up for the difference in nourishment between whole, milk and skim milk. The oil in Moose Meal will be of.particular value to replace fats taken from skim or whey. The change over from whole meal to skim milk and .Moose should be made very gradually. When between three and four weeks of age the calf will be receiving scarcely any whole milk, and in addition to the skim milk 4 ounces of Moose Meal daily. WITH WHEY Moose Meal is even more valuable with whey for rearing strong, healthy calves. Moose Meal supplies the valuable protein and fat lacking in whey. Again only a trace of Moose Meal is added in the first place, not earlier than two weeks of age. Calves three to four weeks of age would be receiving G quarts of whey and G ounces of Moose Meal per day. METHOD (1), FEEDING WET. The Moose Meal should be mixed in with boiling water and then with the skim or whey, after standing for a few minutes or all night if desired. METHOD (2), DRY FEEDING. As soon as calves are several weeks old and thriving, they can be gradually taught to eat dry Moose Meal which is put in the buckets after their drink. This will prevent ear sucking, and start their digestive ■organs on solids. MODERN MACHINERY Playing a vital part in the efforts for increased primary production is modern land-clearing machinery. It might come as a surprise to some people to learn that this complicated but highly efficient machinery is manufactured in New Zealand, and it has been proved, after the most searching tests, that it will do the work for which it was designed equally as well as similar machinery that is imported. Union Foundries, General Engineers, which operate at Stratford, Taranaki, manufacture the highly efficient “Harvos” machinery, the range including land-clearing apparatus, bulldozer and scarifier equipment for caterpillar tractors, which have amply proved their efficiency for all kinds of road work, road graders, road rollers, locomotives, scarifiers, excavators, road planers, bitumen beaters, as well as all classes of general machinery, The firm’s road-making equipment has tackled some stiff work in the Taranaki district, including a big slipclearing job in the famous Tangarakau Gorge, and has come through with the highest honours. There are tremendous possibilities in the pursuance of a sound landclearing policy by modern machinery, particularly now that call has come for an increase in primary production. Union Foundries, Stratford, the makers of the “Harvos” range of equipment, have a thoroughly sound reputation as manufacturers of all classes of specialist and general machinery.
