SATIRE ON DIPLOMACY
“Envoy On Excursion,” by Caryl Brahms and S. J. Simon (London: Joseph). ■>.
The latest result of the BrahmsSimon collaboration begins with the finding of a corpse in the orthodox fashion of detective stories, but instead of proceeding wih their particular brand of brighter detection, as in “A Bullet in the Ballet” and “Casino for Sale,” the authors demonstrate that the influences which prompted the writing of that farcical achievement, “The Elephant is White,” have not waned. Inspector-Detective Quill is on the job again, but when the book’s emphasis departs from detection, he is left with duties of guardianship only, though these prove hectic enough. Diplomatic methods are guyed unmercifully in the working out of a plot whose course careers across Europe with murder and kidnapping as its highlights. This is hilarious satire, packed full with frothy entertainment.
