PROMOTION IN ROYAL NAVY
New Zealand Seamen Leading Seaman Howard Thomas Arthur Wiiiiiall, a New Zealand rating, has been .selected for promotion to the rank of .Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, to date July 22, 1910, according to a statement by the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones, last night. Mr. Wiitnall is the son of Mrs. Ivy Winnail, 7 Elgin Street, Grey Dynn, xlucklaml. fit' was born on September 2.1, 1918. and entered the training ship H.M.S. Philomel on September 21, 1933. In 1935 regulations were introduced which threw open to New Zealand ratings of outstanding ability the same opportunities for promotion to commissioned rank as those available to ratings in the Royal Navy.
Mr. Winnall will join a nnniber of other acting sub-lienteimnts of about his own age who are to undergo courses for the rank of lieutenant at Greenwich College ami other naval schools. He is the second New Zealand rating to receive promotion tinder this scheme.
