VARIOUS SUBJECTS DISCUSSED
Three Government And Two Local Bills Put Through All Stages
AMENDMENTS TO EXISTING STATUTES
Various subjects were discussed in the House of Representatives yesterday. Five Bills were put through all stages and passed and another was given a second reading and referred to the appropriate select committee in order that it might be further examined from the legal point of view. All the morning was occupied with the second reading discussion on the Thames Borough Commissioner Bill and the Carriage By Air Bill. The first mentioned of these measures was passed later in the sitting, and the Carriage By Air Bill was referred to the Statutes Revision Committee.
Consideration of the Health Amendment Bill took the greater part of the afternoon. The Minister of Health, Mr. Armstrong, said that the Health Department had been working for 20 years on the old statute and that any amendments required had been made by means of regulations. These amendments were now being embodied in statute form. There was general approval of the Bill, which was passed. The Reserves and Other Lands Disposal Bill and two local Bills were also passed. A Statutes Amendment Bill containing miscellaneous alterations to existing laws was introduced, read a second time pro forma and referred to the Statutes Amendment Committee. The Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, was obviously pleased with the progress made, and before the adjournment was taken at 4.50 p.m. till Wednesday afternoon he said the House had done a very good day’s work.
