ELECTRICAL MISHAPS
20-Minute Power Failure In Wellington
Wellington tramways and other services dependent on the public electrical supply were held up for about 20 minutes between 1 and 2 p.m. yesterday through a chapter of accidents. lu the first instance work was proceeding on the erection of a new ramp approaching the coal yards at 'the Evans Bay power station where, a feeder cable traverses a trench dug into a bed of rock. One of the drills in use close to the cable trench side-slip-ped and went into the cable, causing a blow-out which affected the cable which feeds the greater part of the Miramar district.
That would not have caused any but local adjustment, were it not for what followed. The Evans Bay station is assisting the Government system by feeding out through the Khandallah sub-station, and when anything of the kind goes wrong some little time has to elapse before the machinery in both stations is synchronized. Unfortunately some mishap occurred somewhere in the Hutt area at about the same time, with the result that two other feeder cables went out, affecting the city services generally, .including the trams and the broadcasting stations.
