The hostel, which is to be officially opened by the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, on Saturday afternoon, September 7, is on the corner of Taranaki and Wigan Streets. It is the latest structure to be built back from the old building alignment to the new one. Thot moons that it is set back 34ft. 6in. from the old building line; this throws the modern lines of the structure into better perspective. A feature of the external architecture of the building is its broadly round corner ot the junction of Wigan Street and Taranaki Street. Then, too, the roof line is judiciously broken by the provision of a sectional second story in the centre of the Taranaki Street frontage, whilst on either side is a spacious flat roof, finished in roofing fabric ond gravel, which should make on excellent drying ground. Practically Fireproof Constructed of reinforced concrete, the building is finished externally in light buff plaster, which contrasts with the white painted window frames, giving the facade a Queen Ann touch. One may gather the dimensions of the building by the fact that it has 90 feet frontage to Taranoki Street ond 65 feet to Wigan Street. The main entrance, flanked by the foundation stone of Aberdeen gron ite, opens into o spacious lobby or hall, from which one may reach the general inquiry office, the common room, and, right ahead, the gymnasium. As this is a hostel for boys, a special feature has been made of the gymnasium. It is a large room 41 feet by 30ft. 6in., rising to a high pitch ed roof, so that there is nothing cramped in head space. Off the gymnasium are shower baths ond conveniences. On the ground floor on the corner is the main dining-room, of comfortable size, with the usual pontry and storeroom space. Then on the Wigan Street side of the floor is situated the men's night shelter, a dormitory for 12 persons, with small dining-room and toilet accommodation for users. On the first floor there are 18 cubicles, each fitted with two beds fo r boys. Each of these cubicles hos o small fable and a combined wardrobe ond drawer unit, so that each boy can have a place for his clothes. There is accommodation altogether for more than 40 persons, opart from the staff. There is living accommodation for the master and matron and their assistants on the second floor. There ore located two bedrooms, two comfortable sitting-rooms, a kitchen, and conveniences, so thot these living quarters are practically self-contained. The new Boys' Hostel is practically fire-proof. The floors arc of concrete, covered with inlaid linoleum, and the partitions of brick. All interior walls are finish ed in plaster in a variety of tones. The hostel was * designed ond planned bv the firm of John S. Swan and William E. Lavelle, and was built by Palmer and Askew, ot a cost of about £12,000. Sub-contractors were Francis Holmes Ltd. (cement), W. H. Firth ond Co., Ltd. (paint), Wallace Roofing Co. (roofing), H. Glover (foundation stone), Dennis & Sons (woodwork), H. L. Parsons (electrical work), B. L. Hart ond Co., Ltd.
