FOUR FURLONGS

Wanganui Debutante Stakes

NOTES AND COMMENTS

Bahrain Sold To U.S.A.

I BY

The Watcher.)

This year’s Debutante Stakes at the Wanganui spring meeting will be run over four furlongs, as there is no starting post at. Awapuni between the tour and live furlong barriers. At Wanganui I he Debutante start was taken back some 50 yards from the four-furlong barrier in order Io get away from a start on the turn. 'l’he start at Awapuni will be just on the turn, and as at Wanganui, will favour horses wel] drawn.

Niglitbeani. The Night Raid colt Nightbeam, now racing in Sydney for Mr. F. W. Hughes, appears to be making good _ progress in his Derby preparation. N’ightbeam is not engaged in the Hobartville Stakes or the Hosehill Guineas. Mr. Hughes, therefore, proposes to ruu him in the weight-for-age races under light weights rather than make him solid lor the Derby by racing him in the handicaps. Beau Pore’s Position. The placing of Beau Bere in 20th place in the winning sires' list for the 1939-40 season, prepared for the “Australasian Turf Register," has been the subject of comment by breeders and owners of stallions. Beau Pere’s stock in Australia won £8378, but. with his winners in New Zealand, the amount, is increased to £31.925 for the season. He was shown as the leading sire in the quarterly figures, but, before the statistics for the final quarter were issued, the Bloodhorse Breeders’ Association of Australia was approached for a ruling whether Beau Pere’s New Zealand winners should be included. The advice was to treat the matter as in the past. The previous year Beau Pere had been credited with the stakes won by fain progeny in both Australia and New Zealand, which placed him fifth on the list of winning sires. Tn dealing with his figures this year, the statistician has, according to the statement of a breeder, gone back to a procedure in vogue many years ago. Bahram For U.S.A. Bahram has been sold by the Aga Khan, but not to a New Zealand breeder. The buyer is an American, and the undefeated son of Blandford will go to the U.S.A. He was sold for £40.000, which will be paid in dollars. The name of the buyer haw not been disclosed.

Largest National Pools. The Winter Cup, on which £15,320 was invested, attracted the biggest pool during the National carnival. The turnover on the Selwyn Handicap was £14.514. 'The biggest pool at Addington was £9371 on the National Handicap. Ivar.

Ivar, who reappeared on the Hastings track recently, has lind to be put out for further treatment. He is suffering a recurrence of his hock trouble. Combined Hunts.

Acceptances for the Combined Hunts’ meeting at New Plymouth next week will close today at 9 p.m. with Mr. C. B. Webster.

Top-priced Colt. The Beau Pere —Banita colt, owned by A. E. Cooper is to race as Beau Son. At last season’s yearling sales at Randwick he topped the list at 3500gn5., and is being trained by J. T. Jamieson.

The Two Cups. Following is the order of popularity— Caulfield Cup: Gladynev, Beaulivre, High Caste, Reading', Historian, True Flight, Apostrophe, Beau Frere, Beau Vite, Scarlet Toi, Dhoti, Beaupartir, Gundagai, Gold Salute, Geebung, Landlaw, Maikni, Moonray, Pure Gold, True Flight, Wilson, Nuffield, Pantier, Fearless, El Golea, Mildura. Melbourne Cup : Bean Vite, Mailtai, Historian, Apostrophe, Halifax, John, Lucrative, Mosaic, Pantier, Pandect, Rivette, Sir Richard, Wilson, Beaulivre. Broadcaster, Billposter, Cephren, Catalogue, Tooranga, Damocles, Dhoti, Gold Salute, Gilltown. Old Quarters Again. Court Yard has gone back to the care of A. McMullan. who will get the gelding ready for hurdle races at the spring meetings, eommeitfeing with Ashburton next month.

English Amateur Killed. Among those killed on active service in France was Lieutenant J. K. Muir, one of England’s keenest and most capable riders over the jumps. At. last year’s Grand Military fixture he won the Grand Military Hunters’ Steeplechase and Gram! Military Handicap Steeplechase the same afternoon. At the time of his death bis team was under the superintendence of his sister, Miss Jill Muir. Epsom And The Metropolitan. During the past week there have been more alterations in Metropolitan than Epsom betting. Beaulivre and High Caste are equal favourites for the Epsom, with El Golea, Gold Salute and .Mildura next; while Reading is a definite fav-. ourite for the Metropolitan, lie is succeeded by Beau Vite, Gundagai and Fantler; with Beaulivre. Beaupartir and Mosaic on the third line. A Double.

A well-known racing man bought a farm for his son. The son, however, knew nothing at all abo.ut the land. He couldn’t even milk a cow, so Dad showed him how. Dad had just got the last drop from the cow, when she lashed out and kicked over the bucket of milk. Dad swore lustily, but his son was not. in the least disturbed. “Milk her again. Dad,” he said.

High Caste. According to “Pilot,”. High Caste’s massiveness is as pronounced as ever, und, while his trainer has never taken his girth measurement, his height some time ago was 16.11. He has grown a little since then. His Warwick Stakes opponents will probably include Beaulivre among the older horses and Nightbeam of the younger division, and the result should give a fair idea as to the prospects of each in their A.J.C. spring engagements. The seven furlongs course at Rand wick provides a good run, and little excuse will be possible for horses beaten in the Warwick Stakes. Ea< hof the three named will carry weight-t.ur-age, the conditions providing, for allowiiiiees but not penalties. Defaulter won last year.
