BIG STREET DAY

Metropolitan Patriotic

Committee

PARCELS FOR TROOPS

The Wellington Mctropolilau Pat. riotic Committee is making com

piete arrangements for a street <iny io be held in Wellington next Friday the 301 b of August.

More funds are needed to de

frav the cost of comforts for I lie men

of Hie fighting forces overseas. It is imperative that tiiis should not be neglected, and Ibe committee is determined to make next Friday s collection a •Teat success. For one thing it is intended that every man in the New Zealand lighting forces serving overseas shall receive a Christmas parcel, no mailer where lie may he stationed.

Originally it was intended Ibat each of these Christinas parcels should include a Christmas pudding, as well as a Christmas cake. This has been altered. Individual puddings are not now to be sent, but in each 10 parcel case there will be packed to lOib. pudding, so people who intend to pad; their own parcels are asked to omit the Christmas pudding. Otherwise the contents are to consist, of one Christmas cake (lib.), 11b. tinned chocolate, 11b. of shortbread or gingernnts, cigarettes or pipe tobacco, small tin of New Zealand fruit, and one handkerchief.

In connexion with the tobacco and cigarettes the Customs Department has granted the committee the privilege of clearing such goods from bond duty free, so that all organizations concerned in the parcel, campaign would do best to obtain their supply of tobacco and cigarettes through, the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Council. All parcels should be" very stronglywrapped, as they will receive a deal of handling before they reach their destination.

The quota for the Wellington province is 6100 parcels, and for the metropolitan zone 3150. Then there is another steady work attended to by the Women’s Metropolitan Patriotic Committee, which is engaged in the preparation, packing, and dispatch of socks, balaclavas, hussifs, and such articles on which the physical comfort of the men depends. This work goes on day in and day out without cessation in the women's committee rooms in Wakefield Street, always a hive of industry. Urgently needed at present are darning needles. It is useless supplying fine needles that bend or break easily. Strong needles, with large eyes are required. The renovation and preparation of the Wellington Soldiers’ Hostel, in Sydney Street East, is receiving attention. This large and convenientlyplaced hostel is being papered and refurnished, and the council hopes to have it ready for every-day use some time next month.
