Orthopaedic Cases

A remit “that the Wellington branch recommended an appeal to the. New Zealand executive to make a suitable contribution available for special orthopaedic hospital equipment, provided that the building of such an orthopaedic hospital as recommended by the Royal Commission be begun within 12 months from the date the offer is made,” was moved by the Wellington branch at the annual conference of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society which opened in Wellington yesterday.

Mr. R, S. Sinclair (Dunedin), raised a point of order. The remit, he said, was practically identical with one that had been heavily defeated at last year’s conference. The only difference was that the sum of £lO,OOO had been replaced in the present remit by the words “a suitable contribution.” He suggested that any discussion be confined to new matter.

’Plie chairman, Mr. Frank Campbell, agreed. Presenting the case on behalf of the Wellington branch, Mr. L. T. Watkins said that one new matter was the fact that the country was at present at war and if New Zealand soldiers took part iu a major battle, there would be quite a number of maimed meu. An orthopaedic hospital would greatly ■ help them when they came back. The main hospital was not the place for their treatment, but in an orthopaedic hospital they could have their damaged limbs treated.

Mr. Sinclair: Are we discussing the returned soldier or the crippled child? Mrs. Gilmer: ’Phe equipment would he available for the children.

Mr. Walkins said that if Hie conference would got behind file orthopaedic hospital, then would come an occupational therapy centre. The hospital had to come and the cheapest and best way of getting beds was by the establishment of an orthopaedic hospital. 'Phe remit was seconded by Mr. T. B. Guseott (Wellington).

On the suggestion of Mr. Campbell, the remit was altered to read:- —“That tills conference supports the Wellington branch in its efforts to obtain an orthopaedic hospital as recommended by the Royal Commission” and in this form waa carried,
