Mr. Winston Churchill's speech injected fresh confidence into the Sydney share market today, resulting in the biggest turnover since pre-war days, with a corresponding advance in price levels.
G. J. COLES AND £O. Increase In Net Profit Although G. J. Coles and Co., Ltd., earned £51,845 more from trading in the year ended June 30, provision for taxation increased by £50,000, leaving the net profit £1845 higher at £257,206. Preference dividend of 8 per cent, absorbed £12,000, and ordinary dividend of 17j per cent, requires £209,871. A sum of £35,000 is transferred to reserve, and with £374 brought in, £709 is carried forward. General reserve is now £320,354. A further £20,841 has been transferred to freehold properties depreciation reserve, making a total of £149,917 in this account. Total reserves, including premiums on shares reserve, now amount to £625,077. Since the outbreak of war sales have been well maintained by finding new sources of supply or substitutes for goods formerly purchased from enemy countries, the report states. It has been necessary to increase the provision for taxation to £120,000 for the current year.
