Items Of Interest From The Provinces

How farmers of the Manawatu district are assisting in the call for increased production is shown in the latest figures from the Kairanga, Foxton and Tokomarii areas, where the increases aimed at are:—

Kairanga: Sheep. 1247; run cattle, 290; dairy cattle. 2(M>; pigs, 35<>: poultry. 720, root crops, 277 acres; grain crops, 140 acres; grass seed. ”122 acres. Tokomaru: Sheep, 625; run cattle, 75; dairy cattle, .134: pigs. 593: poultry, 365; root crops, 99 acres; other crops, 121 acres.

Foxton: Sheep, 100; dairy cattle, 131 ; pigs, 470; poultry, 150; barley, 175 acres.

Wanganui Show Prizes. A generous response has been made to the appeal of the Wanganui Agricultural and Pastoral Association for donations of special prizes for its annual show in November. The special prizes will be spread over practically all sections, and some of them are well worth winning. Further contributions to the association's prize fund have been received as follows: Taranaki Pig Council. £4/4/-; Mrs. R. M. Baldwin. £2; A. 11. Mae Lean, £2/2/-; W. Craig, £10: G. F. Moore, £3 3/-: J. O. Alexander, £5: Wright, Stephenson and Co., £2/2/-; R. Hannah and Co.. 10/6; E. Cole. £2/2/-: New Zealand Refrigerating Company, £lO/10/-; Egmont Hunt Club. £5/5/-; C. J. Masters, £5/5/-; Mrs. C. J. Masters. 10/6. The total amount aimed at for the prize fund is £250, and to date £lOB/1./- has been, received'.

Competition for Giving. “There appears to be plenty of competition these days about giving things,” remarked a member of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce when tlie meeting had before it an Auckland suggestion that the Government be asked to give a shipload of produce to the United Kingdom, the chamber decided not to take any action.

Road Signs Damaged. Road, signs erected by the Automobile Association (Wanganui)- in the vicinity of Marton have been subjected to persistent damage' during recent months, and in some cases have had to be renewed. Several of the newly-ereeted signs, .it. is now reported, have also been damaged, as well as notices erected alongside the signs offering a reward for information leading to the detection of the persons responsible for the damage.

“Best Winter For Years.” “The winter has been the best we have experienced for many years,” said the chairman of directors, Mr. W. C. Gloyn, reviewing the prospects for the dairy industry at the annual meeting of the Rongotea Co-operative Dairy Company. There had been very little rain and less wind than usual, he said, but there had been some hard frosts. The countryside, however, was in need of rain to give the pastures that spring fillip essential iu the endeavour to increase the production of all farm commodities, of which Britain was in argent need today.

Seasonal Work For Power Board. A heavy pressure of seasonal work was reported to a meeting of the Tararua Electric Power Board by the managing secretary, Mr. W. F. Taylor. In all districts the electrical equipment in cowsheds and dairy factories had been undergoing repairs and maintenance work, ami work on service lines and the renewal of poles had been carried out on a systematic 4 basis. Wiring work was plentiful and transformers had been rearranged to deal with overload in several localities.
